Commissioner visits Parkwood Primary School

The Commissioner visited the Parkwood Primary School and presented the Intensive English Centre students with a mural made from their individual artworks.

The students had painted a picture of their faces as part of the Commissioner’s research into the wellbeing of children and young people. The students were asked to draw what made them feel happy and sad as a fun way of exploring what they think affects their wellbeing.

Parkwood students were invited to participate in the wellbeing research because of its high proportion of migrant and refugee children.

The individual pictures were sewn together and the mural was then presented back to the school and will be displayed in the Intensive English Centre.

Wirrabirra Primary School help Commissioner launch guidelines

The Commissioner today visited Wirrabirra Primary School to launch her new guidelines for participation, Involving Children and Young People, which aim to help organisations improve services by including our youngest citizens in decision making.

The Wirrabirra Student Council met the Commissioner and described their involvement in the development of their school manifesto, which is one of the community examples in the guidelines.

The Student Councillors took the Commissioner on a tour of the new facilities that have resulted from the student manifesto including vegetable beds, a worm farm, chickens, shaded seating areas for talking with friends and a water tank.

They explained how they sell the produce from the vegetable garden at school assemblies and use the money raised to buy more seedlings. They also make muffins from the chicken’s eggs and sell them to the teachers.

The Wirrabirra manifesto and the other participation examples listed in her guidelines show how the unique perspectives of young people can enrich decision-making processes and outcomes.

These examples are at the end of the publication which is a simple and practical guide to the process of listening, and responding meaningfully, to children and young people.
