In 2018 the Commissioner will form metropolitan and regional Advisory Committees of young people to inform the office's work on the wellbeing needs of LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans or intersex) children and young people in Western Australia.
Expressions of Interest were open in November and December of 2017, where individual young people aged 15 to 20 years who are LGBTI and live int he Perth metropolitan area were encouraged to apply to be a member of the 2018 Metropolitan Advisory Committee.
The Commissioner will be working with an established group of children and young people in regional WA, which will be announced early next year.
The Commissioner for Children and Young People understands there are a range of terms and definitions that people use to define their gender or sexuality. The Commissioner’s office will use the broad term LGBTI to inclusively refer to all people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex, as well as to represent other members of the community that use different terms to describe their diverse sexuality and/or gender, and these young people are also invited to apply.
