Children's Week 2013

During Children’s Week 2013, the Commissioner held two fully-subscribed seminars at which Canadian researcher and social worker Dr Michael Ungar spoke to more than 500 parents and professionals about how to build resilience in children and young people.

In May 2014 as the Commissioner’s Thinker in Residence Dr Ungar stressed the importance of a community-wide approach, including families, schools, government and business, in strengthening resilience.

Biography

Dr Ungar is a Killam Professor of Social Work at Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia, Canada. He is currently the Network Director of the Children and Youth in Challenging Contexts Network and Co-Chair of the Nova Scotia Mental Health and Addictions Strategy Advisory Committee. He is also the founder and Co-Director of the Resilience Research Centre (RRC).

Dr Ungar has written 11 books and has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on resilience. He also maintains a small family therapy practice in association with Phoenix Youth Programs, a prevention program for street youth and their families.
