As of February 2019, the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations have been endorsed by members of the Council of Australian Governments, including the Prime Minister, the WA Premier Mark McGowan and other state and territory First Ministers. The National Principles aim to provide a nationally consistent approach to creating organisational cultures that foster child safety and wellbeing across all sectors.
The National Principles are aligned to the Child Safe Standards set by the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, though as with the Commissioner's Child Safe Organisations WA resources, they have a broader scope and focus on the rights of all children to be respected and to be safe from all types of harm.
To help organisations implement the National Principles, the Australian Government has developed some practical tools including:
- Charter of Commitment to Children and Young People
- Child Safety and Wellbeing Policy template
- Child Safe Code of Conduct example
- Checklist for online safety.
Additional resources such as the e-learning modules are currently in development. For more information see the national Child Safe Organisations website.
The Commissioner is continuing to work with the WA Department of Premier and Cabinet and the Department of Communities to inform the ongoing support for organisations to implement child safe strategies and the introduction of monitoring of the child safe standards in Western Australia. Updates will be provided throughout the year.
If you have any questions about Child Safe Organisations please contact the Commissioner's office.
