Butler Falcons practise leadership

Late last week I met with a great group of young women who take part in the Edmund Rice Centre’s Youth Leadership Program, and who form the all-African girls AFL rules football team – the Butler Falcons.

The Youth Leadership Program comprises young people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds aged 13 and above, and provides them with opportunities to get involved in a variety of activities at the Butler and Mirrabooka community centres, including sport.

Participants learn about being positive models within the community and are able to practise leadership qualities such as honesty, courage, determination, strength and respect.

To find out more about the Falcons, watch this video or visit their Facebook page.

Later this year my office will consult children and young people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and I spoke to the leadership group about participating in this project.

Thank you to all the young people with whom I met and the staff who organised my visit.
