Dr Clyde Hertzman Early Years Seminar 2012

Focussing on early years

Dr Hertzman’s research links population health to human development and he has been instrumental in developing the Early Development Instrument, a world-renowned research tool which gathers data on key areas of child development.

Dr Hertzman outlined the importance of a whole-of-community approach to early childhood development and how the Early Development Instrument in Canada, and the AEDI, in Australia, provides vital data for the evidence-based decision-making needed to make positive change in the early years.

The more than 150 participants at the seminar were joined through videoconference with colleagues from 13 remote sites.

Following Dr Hertzman's address, particpants were able to ask questions of Dr Hertzman and a panel consisting of Dr Trevor Parry, NIFTeY Australia; Mr Garry Hewitt, Office of Early Childhood Development and Learning, Department of Education; and Ms Irina Cattalini, WACOSS.

The seminar was opened by Mr Noel Nannup who gave the Welcome to Country. The Mooditj Mob from Wesley College performed two traditional dances for attendees, with Ian Wilkes playing didgeridoo.
