Additional seminars and resources for child safe organisations

The Commissioner has released new dates for Child Safe Organisations WA seminars in Perth, Kalgoorlie and Karratha next month.

Bookings are now open for these free seminars which are designed for leaders, managers and staff of organisations that provide activities and services for children and young people.

Since launching Child Safe Organisations WA Guidelines earlier this year, 200 people have attended seminars in Perth and several regional centres to help identify and manage any risks that affect the safety and wellbeing of children and young people, including physical and sexual abuse, bullying and accidental injury.

Royal Commission resources

The current Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse has released two new resources that will also assist organisations in examining their child safe practices:

The Royal Commission has listed ten elements of a child safe organisation compared to the nine domains in the Commissioner’s Child Safe Organisations WA resources.

The Royal Commission’s additional element, Equity is promoted and diversity respected, is integrated across all nine elements of Child Safe Organisations WA, emphasising that organisations need to develop and implement strategies for promoting the participation and safety of all children.

Child Safe Organisations WA recognises the specific needs of different groups such as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex children and young people, the barriers experienced by children and young people with a disability or experience of trauma, and the importance of culture for Aboriginal children and young people, and those from culturally diverse backgrounds.

The Royal Commission has indicated that in their final report to be handed down in December 2017 a volume will be dedicated to child safe organisations.
