City of Rockingham Youth Advisory Council

 

The Youth Advisory Council (YAC) is made up of local young people who are passionate about many different areas of community life.

The Junior Council is made up of two primary school students from each of the 23 primary schools in the City of Rockingham.

There are committees for events, arts, school leaders, sports, youth groups, environment and music.

Us and Our Community project

For their ‘Us and Our Community’ project, the Rockingham Advisory Committee ran a series of photography workshops encouraging young people to photograph their favourite and least favourite places in their community, and to manipulate the images to make improvements to the space.

11 October 2013

Young people from the Rockingham Youth Advisory Council and Junior Council presented an impressive range of ideas to enhance facilities in their area, when the Commissioner visited on 11 October.

As part of their ‘Us and Our Community’ project they took photographs of local beaches, parks and outdoor areas and then compiled drawings depicting suggested changes as overlays.

Two of the Commissioner’s staff met with members of the Rockingham Junior Council as guests at their monthly meeting. The Rockingham Junior Council is made up of 2 students from each of the 23 primary schools in the City of Rockingham. The Commissioner’s staff sat in on the Junior Council’s formal meeting in the Council Chambers. After lunch, the Commissioner’s staff spoke with the Junior Council about the Commissioner’s work and their role on the council. Junior Council members talked about various issues that are important to them and will use their next meeting to discuss community safety and the Neighbourhood Watch program.

The Commissioner met with members of the Rockingham Advisory Committee in January at Youth Jam, a local music event. The Rockingham YAC Music Committee organises a series of music events, taking place once a month over summer. This series provides further opportunities for local young musicians and singers to perform in a popular space in Rockingham. Read the City of Rockingham media statement
