Bunbury seminar supports LGBTI students

The Commissioner’s Bunbury Advisory Committee has hosted a seminar for 80 people on supporting LGBTI students at school.

Young people, parents and school staff from Bunbury and the South West region heard ideas from the student committee members on how to improve understanding and awareness of the needs of LGBTI children and young people.

Commissioner Colin Pettit said the committee was undertaking important work to improve understanding and inclusiveness of all young people in their local communities.

“My Advisory Committee members have looked at the importance of allies and supportive schools, and are aiming to highlight some of the experiences of LGBTI children and young people in schools in new video resources they are now developing,” Mr Pettit said.

The seminar audience and committee members discussed how teachers can best support young people who were questioning their gender identity, some of the initiatives that Bunbury SHS have established to encourage LGBTI inclusion, and the impact that external events and media representations can have on young LGBTI people.

The Commissioner thanked Bunbury Senior High School and Inclusive Education for their support of the seminar.
