New resources encourage children and parents to act on safety

The Commissioner released today new resources for children and young people and parents that aim to support the safety of under 18 year-olds when they are in contact with organisations.

The resources are part of the Commissioner’s Child Safe Organisation WA program, a long-term project to embed the safety, wellbeing and participation of children and young people in policies and day-to-day practices at all levels of an organisation.

“Children and young people have the fundamental right to be safe, feel safe and be treated with respect wherever they are – at home, school, clubs, churches, sport, everywhere,” Mr Pettit said.

“We have created a fun video and accompanying information for WA children and young people that aims to increase their confidence to speak up if they do not feel safe, and to be persistent to find a solution if they are unhappy about the way they’ve been treated.”

“The parents’ resource aims to help parents or carers choose organisations that work hard to implement child safe policies and practices wherever possible.

The Commissioner is also promoting use of child safe eLearning resources, created by the NSW Children’s Guardian NSW, by staff and managers of all organisations that have contact with children and young people.

The eLearning resources are particularly valuable for staff of organisations in regional and remote areas of Western Australia that may have trouble accessing training on child safe practices.
